What’s Free on the Epic Games Store This Week?

Are you the sort of person who worries that you’re going to run out of new games to play? Fret not. While the rising cost of video games and tariffs are just around the corner, leaving many gamers worried, we have a solution. Turn to the Epic Games Store for free games.

But what is the Epic Games Store? Epic established its own storefront in 2019 after it gained incredible success from its battle royale game, Fortnite. Fortnite remains exceptionally popular, partnering with brands and sponsors such as Star Wars. It’s even partnered with celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter. With a success like that, it only made sense for Epic to launch its store as a direct competitor to Valve’s platform, Steam. However, unlike Steam, Epic offers free games each week.

But how do you gain access to these free games? First, you have to sign up for Epic Games — which you can do for free. Then head to the free games section on the official website, where, unless there are extenuating circumstances like holidays, the Epic Games Store offers free games for users to download. Some weeks it’s only a single game, but sometimes you’re lucky and are offered two or three games. The best thing, though? You get to keep these games forever as long as you download them before the week is over.

Unfortunately, we have some bad news if you’re a console gamer. The Epic Games Store is available exclusively on PC, which means only PC users will be able to benefit from the incredible discounts and deals. (The store also has Mac games, but the free games aren’t Mac-compatible.)

So don’t hesitate. Even if you’re not fond of the games on offer, there’s no reason to not download a free game. You might change your mind and play it in the future.

What’s the new free game on the Epic Games Store this week? (May 29 to June 5)

Playdead/Epic Games Store

Limbo

If you’ve not played the award-winning game Limbo from developer Playdead, then here’s your chance to correct that fatal error: It’s now available for free on the Epic Games Store.

Critically acclaimed for its dark and foreboding visuals, as well as its captivating but mysterious story, Limbo is perfect for players who enjoy solving puzzles while having to deal with haunting enemies and a world that’s eager to tear you limb from limb. That’s right, Limbo can get a little gory.

From gigantic spiders to unnerving machinery, Limbo challenges players from the get-go. Along with uncovering the dark world you’ve stumbled through to find your lost sister, you’ll have to deal with the monstrous and the unexplained.

If you’re still not convinced, let us remind you that Limbo won over 100 awards, including Best Horror Game from IGN, Best Visual Arts from the Game Developers Choice Awards, Technical Excellence from the Independent Games Festival and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design at the D.I.C.E. Awards.

Usually $10, Limbo is now available for free via the Epic Games Store. It currently has an Epic Games Store rating of 4.6 out of 5, with audiences particularly enjoying Limbo’s challenging puzzles.

Gearbox/Epic Games Store

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Are you a lover of Dungeons and Dragons, but also have a huge appreciation for Gearbox’s Borderlands series? Then you’ll enjoy Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which takes the two different IPs and meshes them in a way that feels seamless and chaotic at the same time, all without becoming too silly.

Players who know their way around Dungeons and Dragons will shine in this game. You’ll not only be able to customize the look of your hero, but you’ll be able to roll actual dice and make a multi-class character that will put fear into the heart of the wild and wacky monsters you’ll encounter.

Better yet, Borderlands fans haven’t been left behind in this action-RPG. You’ll recognize plenty of characters from the series, and while this game takes place separately from the original series, there are plenty nods and Easter eggs to be found within the game’s narrative and gameplay.

But the best thing about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is that you don’t have to adventure alone. You’ll be able to jump right into the action with friends. While it isn’t exactly like the gameplay of Dungeons and Dragons, it doesn’t mean there’s zero reward for working together.

The downside is that, friends or not, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands gameplay can feel a little like a grind at times. But, if you’re into Borderlands and enjoy that sort of thing, you’re guaranteed to have a whale of a time.

Usually $60, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is available for free via the Epic Games Store. It currently has an Epic Games Store rating of 4.6 out of 5, with audiences appreciating the game’s challenging boss battles and its representation of diverse characters.

The Epic Games Store has yet to reveal which games will be available next week, but it does show three slots. You’ll have to check back on June 5 to find out. Given past experiences, mystery games usually become ones to watch out for.
