  • WhatsApps desktop and web clients could soon offer support for voice and video calling.
  • The upcoming feature will also reportedly enable group calling.

WhatsApp has long allowed users to make calls on mobile devices. Now call support could hit WhatsApps web and desktop clients soon.

According to a report from WhatsApp Tipster WABetaInfoThe ability for users to have voice and video chats beyond the phone app is currently under development.

Screenshots of a future WhatsApp web build suggest that a popup will appear with the option to decline or answer any pending calls. It is unclear whether pending video calls will preview users’ video feeds like the phone app. A call pop-up could also be offered to allow callers to mute an ongoing call or switch from voice to video.

Group voice and video calls are also supported, but will likely need to adhere to the eight-person limit set in WhatsApp.

With call support, WhatsApp’s web and desktop clients come one step closer to independence from their smartphone bands. While users currently need to connect to these clients through their smartphone, the company is reportedly still working on support for linked device enrollment. This allows users to log into WhatsApp from multiple devices. It is unclear when this feature will be available.

With both features going live, WhatsApp users may be able to use the app as a standalone alternative to Skype and Zoom on the desktop in the future without having to sign in or connect using their mobile devices.

It is unclear when WhatsApp will operate both functions, however WABetaInfo believes support for web and desktop calling may be available “soon”.
