Vivo concept phone with detachable selfie camera wins design award

Vivo IFEA phone with detachable selfie camera 1

  • Vivo has won a design award for a phone with a detachable selfie camera module.
  • The detachable camera functions as a stand-alone device.
  • Commercial use is currently unclear.

Vivo has always been a leader in smartphone design, especially when it comes to camera innovations. This year’s Vivo Apex pioneered the under-display selfie camera and took over the lead from its predecessor who first introduced us to pop-up cameras. Now Vivo is stealing the limelight again with a novel smartphone camera that can be detached from the body of the phone.

The new concept device from Vivo with a detachable front camera is called IFEA. It was awarded the Red Dot Design Award (h / t) Gizmochina) for its modular selfie camera that can be used as a standalone device. From the looks of it, you can likely detach the camera unit from the main phone body and use it remotely.

As described on the Red Dot website, the detachable camera can be controlled using voice commands. The Red Dot product summary is as follows:

IFEA has several accessory and support mechanisms with different modes to increase stability and storage. This allows video to be recorded while walking or exercising without affecting visual stability. The device can be used seamlessly with the smartphone’s original camera.

In addition to the picture showing the detachable selfie camera, there is another picture on the Red Dot website showing the display and the back of the Vivo phone. As expected, the screen is seamless with no notches or holes. There’s also a multi-cam setup on the back, suggesting that Vivo isn’t making the selfie camera the main camera on the phone.

It is unclear how Vivo plans to use this new modular camera design. Allows users to switch selfie camera modules, or can you just unplug the module from the phone for remote use? We reached out to Vivo to clarify the concept and whether we’ll see it on a future phone. We’ll update this article as we know more.
