Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and Sony Xperia 1 III on the windowsill

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

We’re well into half the year, and our own Rob Triggs thought it would be a good time to test the photography skills of some of the most popular phones released so far in 2021.

Rob compared several high-profile flagships available in the US, namely the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, OnePlus 9 Pro, Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and Sony Xperia 1 III. In his opinion, Samsung’s device is the “marginal” winner simply because it does not have any major weaknesses. We asked readers to choose the phone that took the best photos, and that’s how you voted.

Which phone takes the best pictures?

Results

We released the poll on July 31st and it received an enthusiastic response from Android authority Reader. Over 3,700 votes were counted at the time of writing and the most popular choice by far was the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra which received nearly 46% of the vote. This means that the most popular readers’ poll will match our own winner.

Second place goes to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with nearly 26% of respondents voting for the Apple phone. We thought it would be pretty handy too, but we got annoyed with the long-range zoom features, HDR, and low-light performance.

Sony’s Xperia 1 III managed the third step with just over 15% of the votes, while the OnePlus 9 Pro rounded off the poll with fourth place and almost 13% of all votes.

Remarks

  • Ellio74: For me personally, the Sony really stood out as Apple lags behind with their nearly a year old flagship and Samsung and OnePlus have more noticeable flaws (color accuracy, white balance, or color processing) when it comes to what really matters to me. Sony did a great job once again, they just need to improve the situation of the front camera.
  • Stephan Marcus: Wow. Thank you very much for the excellent evaluation that was carried out so carefully. I’d love to buy the Sony Xperia 1 iii, but I think I’m an iteration away, not because of the camera (though selfie and video aren’t that great) but the battery life. Battery life was an issue with Pixels, whose software is the best. And battery life is very important to me. Why can’t Sony offer better display management to save battery life?
  • Setebos: Oneplus 9 Pro User here (comes from pixels that I also love but just can’t stand for the time being, the 6 Pro XL will hopefully change that) and I have to say that the camera is unfortunately far from perfect again, I can’t see that Oneplus software could ever be as good as an iPhone or a Pixel. They just suck on that particular aspect.
  • Lamar Taylor: I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the GS21 Ultra as my business phone … this competition didn’t include video quality. The iPhone 12 Pro Max destroys every Android phone in this category. Since I use both phones every day and travel a lot, they are about the same in the real world. The GS21 is much better at zooming in, but that’s a feature I use the least on a camera.
  • Victor Rumyantsev: There is no way that Xperia’s boring, discolored, neutral images, blown skies, etc. are what I see with my eyes. Seriously, Galaxy S21 photos are much more natural and closer to reality.

That’s it for the results of our camera shootout survey. Thanks for voting and leaving comments. Are you surprised by these survey results?
