Without a charger in the box, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series has given consumers new headaches. It’s not easy to pay extra for a new charger, browse third-party options, or just rely on an old plug lying around. Especially given the ever-confusing state of USB-C charging standards.

Before you buy a new charger, we’ve tested a selection of older smartphone plugs and a variety of newer third-party chargers to help you make your decision. Here is everything you need to know about buying the perfect Samsung Galaxy S21 charger.

Our rating: Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra test: Ultra refined

The best Samsung Galaxy S21 charger for fast charging

The entire Samsung Galaxy S21 range is charged with a maximum rated power of 25 W. This is achieved by using the USB PD PPS (USB Power Delivery Programmable Power Supply) standard. This can also be achieved through compatibility with the Quick Charge 4+ standard. In particular, the phone negotiates with 2.6 amps at 9.3 volts for a total charging power of 25 W.

Therefore, you will not be able to achieve this speed using regular USB power, Quick Charge 3.0, or various other charging standards.

The Galaxy S21 is only charged with 25 PS via a USB Power Delivery PSS plug. Other plugs will also charge, albeit more slowly.

Of course, Samsung sells chargers that can be used to charge the latest smartphones. The company’s 25W and 45W travel adapters are USB PD 3.0 PPS compatible. However, you only need the latter if you want to charge the Galaxy Note 10 Plus, S20 Ultra or a USB PD-compatible laptop or tablet.

If you are looking for a future-proof 45W PPS plug in the market, you can spend less money on the Elecjet 45W and get the same results as Samsung. The Electjet 45W charger supports the required USB PD PPS charging modes. We tested the phone to confirm that it was putting out the full 25W maximum power of the Galaxy S21. The Elecjet or one of Samsung’s official chargers are currently the best ways to charge the Samsung Galaxy S21 series at full speed.

Oddly enough, we also tested the PPS-compatible Anker PowerPort III Pod 65W, but it doesn’t charge the Galaxy S21 quickly. There may be a profile problem preventing the two from swapping power needs. However, this does not instill confidence that the USB PD PPS specification is helping to simplify the convoluted brochure of charging standards.

Can I charge the Galaxy S21 with my old Samsung charger?

If you already own an older Samsung charger, you might not need to buy a new one to quickly charge your Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphone. Samsung’s 25W Super Fast Charging and 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0 plugs support USB PD PPS and provide the full 25W supported by the Samsung Galaxy S21 series.

Samsung shipped its 25 W super fast charging connector with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones. You need a fairly new Samsung phone, but last generation Samsung phones already come with the best charger for the Galaxy S21.

Older Samsung chargers with a USB-A port labeled Adaptive Fast Charging will still work with the Samsung Galaxy S21, but will not offer the fastest charging speed available. These plugs conform to Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charge standard and deliver 15W for the Galaxy S21 series. You can find the adaptive connector that comes with the Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy S10 series, and older Samsung models.

Samsung’s older adaptive quick-charge plugs provide 15W of power, as do newer USB PD and quick-charge accessories.

15W might not sound like much, but unless you choose a USB PD PPS charger, 15W is the maximum power you can get from third-party plugs. We tested a wide range of third-party chargers with fast charge and USB powered support, and the Galaxy S21 only draws 15W from these chargers. So you might as well save money and stick with an old Samsung charger.

If you’re upgrading from another brand of phone, the charging speed you get when you turn on your new Samsung Galaxy S21 is much faster. We tested chargers from Apple, Google, LG, Huawei, Xiaomi and others. The table below is not an exhaustive list, but it does show the key specs you need to quickly charge Samsung’s latest flagships.

If you have an old phone charger that supports USB Power Delivery, Quick Charge 3.0 or Quick Charge 2.0, your Samsung Galaxy S21 will charge with a maximum of 15W power. Chargers that support proprietary fast-charging standards, such as those from Huawei and Realme, are less likely to support those universal standards and will default to 9W or 5W charges or may not work at all.

In general, Chinese brands support proprietary rather than the universal standards that the Galaxy S21 works well with. Well-known western household brands like Google and LG work quite well with Samsung’s latest flagship brands.

The same rule of thumb applies to third-party accessories from Anker, Belkin, Aukey, and others. Plugs and connections that support USB Power Delivery, Qualcomm Quick Charge and Samsung AFC offer the Samsung Galaxy S21 a power of up to 15 W. Standard USB connections or those that support Apple’s 2.4A standard are available on 9 W or slower reset.

Which adapter charges the Samsung Galaxy S21 the fastest?

If you are interested in the specific results of our Samsung Galaxy S21 charging test, please see the graphic below for our full dataset.

Based on our extensive tests, the only way to achieve the Samsung Galaxy S21’s maximum charging power of 25W is to use a USB Power Delivery PPS connector. Even then, a power profile of 3.3V to 11V must be supported for it to function properly. So far, we’ve only identified three chargers that run the Samsung Galaxy S21 at full speed. These are Samsung’s 25W and 45W Super Fast Charging Plugs and the Elecjet 45W Super Fast Charging Adapter.

Other third-party chargers typically reach 15W of power, which is definitely slower, but still reasonably useful. The Samsung Galaxy S21 is charged with 15 W via the standards USB Power Delivery, Quick Charge and Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging. Older phone plugs and third-party accessories support this speed. Be aware, however, that not every old phone charger or accessory will quickly charge the Samsung Galaxy S21.
