OnePlus 8T vs older OnePlus phones: Should you upgrade?

OnePlus 8T against OnePlus 8 against OnePlus 8 Pro with camera modules

At $ 749, the OnePlus 8T is another affordable entry into the OnePlus portfolio. There’s a lot to like when you combine the latest performance, 5G, and a lower price tag than the OnePlus 8 Pro. The phone is slightly more expensive than the company’s original value proposition, but still a steal when compared to many of the more expensive flagships out there.

Here’s the OnePlus 8T compared to older OnePlus phones so you can decide if it’s worth upgrading.

Our verdict: OnePlus 8T review

Iteration is the name of the game: OnePlus 5, 5T and 6 are displayed

If you’re still rocking an original OnePlus handset, I’m impressed. However, I would urge you to consider upgrading. Smartphone hardware has made great strides in recent years, not just in terms of performance.

Customers with a OnePlus 5 or older will benefit from the faster Snapdragon 865 processor, much faster wired charging, a built-in fingerprint scanner, faster 5G data, and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate display. The OnePlus 8T is superior in every category, especially if You have a OnePlus 3 or 3T. The older quad-core processor, slower memory settings and aging single camera are outdated by modern standards.

However, OnePlus 5 customers could possibly get through another year if they want to get a little more life out of their handset. The phone’s hardware only really started showing its age this year. However, if you’re looking for the fastest update path for Android 11, picking up the 8T is definitely the way to go.

OnePlus 8T versus OnePlus 6 and 6T

OnePlus 6T against tree

An upgrade might not be that urgent if you’re still using the OnePlus 6 for 2018. The phone is only a few years old, after all. It’s still a perfectly serviceable smartphone with solid performance and a well-aged design. But again, you should consider the 8T for its better cameras, 5G networks, and some newer features like the built-in fingerprint reader.

The OnePlus 6 has a 20W dash charge and 3,300mAh battery compared to the 8T’s 65W charger and 4,500mAh cell. A shortening of the battery life could tip the scales in favor of a new purchase. But only if you can live without a headphone jack.

The OnePlus 6T is very similar to the OnePlus 6 and is therefore also right on the fence when it comes to whether an upgrade is worthwhile. The 8T is probably only worth spending your money on if your 6T is feeling a little sluggish or the battery is on its way out.

OnePlus 8T versus OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

OnePlus’ 7 series is far from dated, so it’s much harder to justify splashing the money on another phone so quickly. Here you will find a similar main camera, lots of power and storage options as the 8T. Although the latter comes out of the box with Android 11.

The OnePlus 8T has a more flexible camera setup than the OnePlus 7 with main, wide angle, macro and monochrome lenses compared to the main and depth sensors on the 7. Charging at 65W is also faster than the versions with 20 W and 30 W for the 7 and 7 Pro. The only really compelling reason to switch to OnePlus 8 is if you really want to take advantage of 5G. Although the current state of 5G deployment is likely to limit its appeal right now.

Long term review: One year with the OnePlus 7 Pro

However, the OnePlus 7 Pro offers some features that you won’t find in the OnePlus 8T. Despite the display’s 90Hz refresh rate, it offers a denser QHD + resolution, which some prefer. The camera package of the OnePlus 7 Pro has a wide-angle lens and a telephoto zoom. So it’s probably the more practical, flexible shooter without the trickier lenses of the OnePlus 8T.

While some can convince themselves to switch from the OnePlus 7 to the 8T, the 7 Pro is very difficult to justify.

OnePlus 8T versus OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro

With a slightly faster Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, there is an even smaller performance gap between the OnePlus 7T series and the OnePlus 8T. The range also includes a built-in fingerprint scanner, 90 Hz displays and a 30 W charge. That’s a bit behind, but it’s not entirely different from the features of the OnePlus 8T and is certainly not worth buying a whole new phone for it.

The biggest difference between the phones is in the camera setup. The 7T has more traditional main, telephoto, and wide-angle setups compared to the 8T’s more “artistic” quad camera setup. I would argue that the 7T and 7T Pro offer the more useful camera packages, and I wouldn’t recommend upgrading avid photographers.

Here, too, the Pro model offers some additional functions, so switching to the 8T would be a downgrade in some respects. The OnePlus 7T Pro offers a QHD + display and a pop-up selfie camera that you won’t find on the 8T.

OnePlus 8T versus OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro

I’ll give a simple answer here: no, don’t buy a OnePlus 8T if you have a OnePlus 8, and definitely not if you have an 8 Pro. The OnePlus’ T revision offers only minor improvements over the previous model, and the 8T is definitely not revolutionary. All three also offer 5G connectivity, so you don’t need the 8T to get the most out of your network.

The phones have a lightning-fast Snapdragon 865 processor, large batteries, UFS3.0 storage in configurations of up to 256 GB and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The 65W charging is a great bonus for the 8T, but the 30W charging of the 8 Series is fast enough anyway. The slight upgrade from a 90 Hz to a 120 Hz display from 8 to 8T is similarly nice, but far from a major improvement. It’s certainly not worth paying back $ 749 anytime soon.

In addition, the OnePlus 8 Pro has IP68 dust and water resistance, a 120 Hz display, wireless charging and a superior camera setup. The 8T is definitely a downgrade to the 8 Pro, which remains the company’s flagship for 2020.

OnePlus 8T versus OnePlus Nord

At £ 379 / Rs. 27,999, the OnePlus Nord doesn’t fit in the same price bracket as the OnePlus 8T, but we’ll briefly mention it. Given that both handsets are so new, I hope no one thinks about switching from the Nord to the 8T.

The Nord doesn’t have the high-end features or performance of the OnePlus 8T, but it costs almost half. This makes it the more affordable entry point into OnePlus’ 5G ecosystem. Right, you don’t need a OnePlus 8 series phone to use 5G.

Perhaps a more interesting question is whether the OnePlus Nord or OnePlus 8T is the better upgrade option if you’re rocking an older OnePlus handset. On the whole, the Nord is a great choice for customers on a budget, while the OnePlus 8T is for those who need outstanding performance without breaking the bank.

Looking back at the OnePlus series, the OnePlus 8T offers an excellent upgrade point for customers with aging cell phones. The lower price in combination with high-end features offers the right balance between the budget-friendly OnePlus Nord and the high-end OnePlus 8 Pro. If you own a OnePlus 5 or older, you should definitely consider upgrading.

OnePlus 8T Better than the OnePlus 8, but still not as good as the OnePlus 8 Pro

OnePlus’ newest flagship has some relatively subtle improvements over the OnePlus 8. However, it has a big new feature: Warp Charge 65, which allows the 8T to charge faster than any other OnePlus phone.
