TL; DR

  • The Nothing Ear 1 are true wireless earphones with noise cancellation and Bluetooth 5.2.
  • The USB-C case supports wireless charging and charges the stemmed earbuds quickly and efficiently.
  • The Ear 1 is available today for $ 99 in the US, EU, and India.

After a lot of hype and anticipation, Nothing Ear 1’s true wireless noise canceling earbuds are available today. Nothing, the new company of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, emphasizes the importance of transparency and respects that the form with the design of the Ear 1 follows the function.

The company keeps things simple with its debut product. Listeners receive active noise cancellation (ANC), a case with USB-C and wireless charging compatibility, and automatic ear recognition. The earphones are also waterproof to IPX4, so they can also be used for training.

Some might say the Ear 1 is similar to a pair of clear Apple AirPods Pro headphones, but there is one distinct difference: the price. The Nothing Ear 1 is only $ 99, less than half of Apple’s flagship earbuds.

How good is the noise cancellation on the Nothing Ear 1?

While we don’t yet know how effective the noise cancellation is, the inclusion of ANC in that budget is pretty impressive. You can toggle between two ANC modes (light and maximum) to adapt to the volume of your surroundings.

The earbuds use a three-microphone array to measure noise both inside and outside the ear canal (i.e. hybrid ANC). Nothing postulates an attenuation of -40 dB, but moderate your expectations. These results are likely to be under ideal conditions with a perfect fit. For reference, other true ANC wireless earbuds that cost less than $ 100 do very little with environmental noise.

In addition to active noise suppression, the Ear 1 also supports the transparency mode – matching the appearance of the earphones and the housing. With transparency activated, you can hear your surroundings. This is an important safety feature for outdoor athletes or anyone walking through busy streets. The earbuds also support full mono listening, which is important for the hearing impaired or if you just don’t like the transparency mode.

Do they sound good?

Each Ear 1 headphone contains an 11.6mm dynamic driver, which is quite large for a set of true wireless headphones. Remember, however, that bigger doesn’t inherently mean better. Teenage Engineering, an electronics company that cares about design, designed both the look of the Ear 1 and fine-tuned its drivers. If you want the Ear 1 to follow a consumer-friendly standard frequency response, expect enhanced bass and treble as standard.

Will there be a mobile app?

One hand holds the open charging case of Nothing Ear 1 to reveal the real wireless earbuds.

Nothing brings a free mobile app to the market with its earphones that works uniformly on iOS and Android. With the Ear (1) app you can adjust the touch controls of the earbuds, use the “Find my earbuds” function, switch between three listening modes (ANC on, ANC off, transparency), receive firmware updates and much more. Nothing also offers four EQ presets to choose from. For the sake of simplicity, a user-defined EQ module is deliberately omitted; the Ear 1 should be accessible earphones for listeners with different technical know-how.

How long does the Nothing Ear 1 battery last?

With noise cancellation activated, you get four hours of playtime on a single charge, for a total of 24 hours with the case’s reserve battery. If you disable ANC, you’ll get almost six hours of playback time on a single charge, for a total of 34 hours of listening time with the case’s battery.

The case charges the earphones quickly: 10 minutes in the case results in 50 minutes of playing time with noise canceling (72 minutes with ANC off). If you charge the case for 10 minutes, you get six hours of battery life with ANC (eight hours without ANC).

Which bluetooth codecs are available?

Listeners get the latest Bluetooth 5.2 firmware, which opens the door to LE audio support and the LC3 codec. Listeners can stream instantly using the SBC or AAC bluetooth codecs. This is perfect for iPhone owners, but the performance of AAC on Android varies greatly depending on the hardware.

Are the Ear 1 earphones good for making phone calls?

As with noise cancellation, we can’t yet talk about the real-world performance of the mics, but good mic quality can be expected based on the location of one of the mics. As with other stemmed earbuds, the Ear 1 places a microphone on the bottom of each stem for clear voice transmission.

Where can I buy the Nothing Ear 1?

The Nothing Ear 1 earbuds are available starting today from the Nothing website and retail for $ 99. Global rollout includes the US, EU and India, and Nothing plans to expand availability to other retail stores later.

What’s Nothing’s next plan?

When asked, Nothing did not reveal certain products that came down the pike. However, a representative from Nothing announced that the company intends to expand beyond audio in hopes of building its own ecosystem of Nothing products (watch out, Apple). We’ll be sure to keep you updated on Nothing as the company matures.
