Jim Carrey to play Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live
WithIt was only a matter of time before NBC’s live sketch comedy series ran for US President Throw a celebrity to play it.
Saturday Night Live announced on Wednesday this actor-comedian will play the roles of former vice president and current president, hoping for the upcoming 46th season.
“There was a certain amount of interest on his part, and then we obviously responded positively,” SNL producer Lorne Michaels told Vulture. “But it came down to discussions about what the setting was. It’ll give energy and strength to the part, and hopefully it’s fun.”
Past celebrities who play Biden are among others, Kevin Nealon, John Mulaney and most recently actor Woody Harrelson.
SNL will also kick off the new season with five consecutive shows on October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31. This is the first time in the show’s long history that there are so many consecutive episodes.
“I made the decision early on … that we would do something that we hadn’t done before, five shows in a row,” said Michaels. “Because there are four debates and then it’s Halloween and it’s the weekend before the election. And if the election is extended, we’re going to do six or seven shows in a row, unfortunately.”
The show announced that too three new comedians – Lauren Holt, Punkie Johnson and Andrew Dismukes – have been added to the cast for the new season.
In accordance with social distancing protocol, the show will also have a limited studio audience at the Rockefeller Center in New York City and will “work closely with Governor Cuomo’s team”.
