  • The next foldable Huawei could be similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.
  • Designs of the foldable were discovered in a patent application.
  • The design features an inward-folding screen with a large primary display in front of it.

Huawei’s next foldable phone may look more like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, according to a patent application revealed by LetsGoDigital.

The designs indicate a shift in Huawei’s foldable philosophy, and suggest that the company is considering switching to an inward-folding design instead of the outward-folding system used by the Mate XS.

However, this is not the only similarity to the Samsung device that the foldable device might have. For starters, Huawei’s design features a large primary display, a larger screen when the device is unfolded, and a rectangular camera plate on the back of the leaflet. A side-mounted combination of fingerprint sensor and power switch is also located under a volume rocker.

While the design refers to a punch-hole selfie camera on the main screen, Huawei, unlike Samsung’s smaller snapper, is oval in the middle and aligned on the top left. A rectangular camera array is also used on the back of the Huawei design, but it contains five cameras instead of the three cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 2.

While the inward-folded design offers better protection for the delicate folding screen, there are downsides.

Thanks to the fold-out layout, Huawei was able to use its rear cameras for selfies. This design meant it could get away with less camera hardware. The company would also need to focus on protecting its hinge design from bumps, bruises, and dust. These improvements could bring the price of the revamped design well above the Mate XS’s ~ $ 2,400 premium.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors that Huawei is improving its foldable phone philosophy. The phone was first called the Mate X2 in August and is said to have an 8.03-inch display. Previous patent filings discovered in April also pointed to a Galaxy Fold-like device.

Huawei hasn’t announced its next-generation foldable phone yet. So take these designs with a pinch of salt. While these are patent applications, they may not resemble a ready-to-use product. The inner fold seems to be the most practical design for foldable phones, however, giving users the benefit of a large, more traditional single display in the front and a larger screen when needed.
