Now that you know which plans are available, which one is right for your needs?

Basic plan: Good for budget seekers, individuals, or low-end internet users

At $9.99 a month, the Basic internet plan is great for people who want to access Netflix for the lowest amount of money. It’s also perfect for people who don’t want to share their account with others as it only supports one concurrent stream at a time. Finally, the Basic plan only streamed up to SD (480p) video resolution, which is good for people who are streaming with a limited amount of internet access, or users who might have a hard data cap per month.

Standard plan: Good for the average user

The $15.49 a month Standard plan, as the name suggests, is great for the average streamer. You get two concurrent streams at once with the plan, which lets you watch one movie while your significant other can watch another in a different part of the house. You also get a boost to HD (1080p) video resolution which is where the majority of Netflix movies and TV shows are set.

Premium plan: Good for families and for high-end TVs

The most expensive Netflix subscription is the Premium plan at a whopping $19.99 a month. This plan is great for larger families with up to four concurrent streams at once supported. It’s also great for people who want to watch shows and films at 4K video resolution. Most currently Netflix exclusive series and movies support 4K, so if you have a big screen TV with 4K support, this plan is for you. Finally, the plan is good for people who have faster internet connections with no data caps.

A few countries, including India, Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, do have a way to access Netflix for an even cheaper price. Subscribers can access the service on just one smartphone or tablet, at SD video resolution. The price for this plan in India is just ₹199 (about $2.61) a month, and the African nations can get it for $3.99 a month. Netflix has so far not expanded this plan to the US or most of its other territories.

Netflix cost: Password sharing

In 2022, Netflix announced it was testing a new paid service. It would allow its customers to share their accounts with users outside of their own family household. This new charge is being tested currently in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, with subscribers of their Standard and Premium plans allowed to add up to two additional users not in their household on their account for the price of around $2 to $3 a month, depending on the territory. There’s no word on when, or even if, this new charge will expand to the US and other parts of the world.

Get Netflix for free

While Netflix has done away with its generous 30-day free trial in the US and other parts of the world, you might be able to access the service for no additional cost. The easiest ways is to have a family member in your household give you access to their account. Also, certain wireless carriers also offer a Netflix subscription if you sign up for one of their mobile device data plans.

Netflix Cost: DVD and Blu-ray plans

dvd com

Before it became the massive streaming service and content provider it is now, Netflix began as a way to get an unlimited number of DVDs, and later Blu-Rays, for a monthly fee. Despite its streaming business becoming its main source of revenue, Netflix still maintains its disc subscription plans in the US.

Unlike the streaming site, Netflix’s disc rental service (which it operates at DVD.Netflix.com) has nearly every new, and a ton of older, movie and TV discs you can access. Most are not available on Netflix’s streaming service, and many can’t be accessed on any streaming service at all. All you have to do is go to the Netflix DVD site and create a list of films you want to see. Netflix then mails the first available title on your list, along with a return envelope with prepaid postage. You can hold onto that disc for as long as you have a paid subscription, but you won’t get another disc on your list until you return it.

For the price of $9.99 a month, you can get one DVD disk at a time, There’s also a more expensive plan for $14.99 which lets you get two discs in the mail at one time, again with an unlimited number of disks you can borrow. You can also get the higher-end Blu-ray discs with this plan.

Netflix Cost: FAQ

Yes. The Basic plan just supports one concurrent stream at a time, and one device for download. The Standard plan increases those numbers to two for both, and the Premium plan doubles those numbers up again to four.

Not any more. While Netflix did offer those kinds of plans many years ago, it has decided to separate its streaming and disks plans.

The service raised its prices in early 2022, and we don’t anticipate it will do so again for at least another year, if not longer.

Right now, the service has not indicated any plans to offer an ad-based plan for a lower price, although we know many people believe it should.
