Google unveils the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G

Release date of the Google Pixel 5 Pixel 4a 5g event

  • Google unveiled the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G at its Launch Night In event.
  • Both promise 5G, Snapdragon 765G chips and larger batteries as well as well-known cameras.
  • They’ll be available starting October, starting at $ 499 for the 4a 5G and $ 699 for the 5.

Two of Google’s worst-kept secrets are now official. Google unveiled the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G at its Launch Night In event, including their release dates and prices. The details won’t surprise if you’ve paid close attention, but these are still essential devices – both as a showcase for Android 11 and as a change in Google’s Pixel strategy.

Unlike last year’s flagship Pixel 4, the Pixel 5 is an upper mid-range phone with a 6-inch 90 Hz OLED screen, a Snapdragon 765G chip, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of non-expandable storage. There is also IP68 water resistance. You won’t find a hand gesture sensor or other unique hardware tricks, though the Pixel 5 offers wireless charging (including reverse wireless charging) and 18W fast charging. And yes, the rumors of a new color were true – you can get the Pixel 5 in a Sorta Sage green shade in addition to Just Black.

The cameras are mostly familiar to previous Pixel owners with a 12.2-megapixel main rear sensor, a new 16-megapixel ultra-wide shooter, and an 8-megapixel front camera. As usual, Google relies on AI and other software features to deliver high quality photos. A new Google Photos editor with portrait lighting lets you adjust the lighting for foreground objects even for photos you took years ago, while Cinematic Pan adds film-like effects to your recordings. Night vision is finally available when you take pictures in portrait mode.

The Pixel 4a 5G is significantly more than a Pixel 4a with faster wireless data. At the event, Google confirmed that the Pixel 4a 5G would have a larger 6.2-inch OLED (albeit at 60 Hz), as well as the same Snapdragon 765G and cameras as the Pixel 5. You’ll have to settle for 6GB of RAM, a plastic case, and 18W wired charging, but it might be worth it if you want more than the no-frills 4a without spending a lot on features you know you don’t will use.

Software and Google services play an important role beyond photography. Extreme Battery Saver helps you keep your phone on for up to 48 hours, while Hold for Me keeps you from listening to music while you wait for customer service. These features will become available to older devices over time.

The Pixel 5 is available for pre-order now in the US and several other countries. The release date is October 15th and the price is $ 699. The Pixel 4a 5G launches at $ 499 with a release date of October 15 in Japan and November 9 elsewhere. Buyers also receive free three-month trials for Stadia and YouTube Premium, 100GB of Google One storage for three months, Google Play Pass and Gold / Silver Game Points status.

Neither the Pixel 4a 5G nor the Pixel 5 will likely make you jump ship if you have a Pixel 4 or earlier, but that’s probably by design. Google’s Pixel sales struggled while chasing flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S series and Apple’s high-end iPhones, and that was before the pandemic shifted focus to lower-cost devices. Mid-range telephones like Pixel 5 and 4a 5G defy these direct comparisons and value a good price-performance ratio.
