Fujifilm Instax Square SQ1 simplifies selfies for instant film fans

With the Instax Square SQ1, Fujifilm makes capturing great instant analog photos a breeze. That’s a good thing, because instant film isn’t cheap – around 60 to 70 cents a print – and the last thing you want to do is take poorly exposed footage.

The $ 120 Square SQ1 swaps the 86 x 54 millimeter (3.4 x 2.1 in) prints from the company’s Instax mini cameras for 86 x 72 mm (3.4 x 2.8 in) film, the actual image portion being 62 mm (2.4 inches) . I prefer this size simply because I find it easier to take pictures, especially for selfies.

How Instax Mini 11 The SQ1 was announced earlier this year and automatically adjusts shutter speed and flash output based on ambient light conditions. The exposure setting was reliable on my test shots, but you need to be prepared for the flash to go out if you may not be expecting it. No doubt it worked better than me when I thought of changing the exposure settings on older Instax cameras.


The SQ1 is powered by two CR2 lithium batteries in the handle under the viewfinder.

The camera starts by rotating the lens. The lens has two positions: one for subjects a foot (0.3 m) or more from the camera and a selfie mode when you are between 12 and 20 inches (0.3 to 0.5 m ) away from the lens. There’s also a small mirror on the front of the lens barrel so you can make sure you’re properly framed.

Although the handle looks nice and has a ribbed texture to help you hold it, it was difficult for me to hold it when taking selfies. If you have larger hands, be sure to use the strap that came with it and pay attention to where you rest your thumb.

Along with the new camera, which will be available in blue, orange and white versions in mid-October, Fujifilm announced new instant packages for Instax Square Rainbow and Monochrome. Like normal square foil, each pack contains 10 prints. They will also be available in mid-October and will sell for $ 15 per pack.

Although a large part of the digital camera market has disappeared due to the proliferation of excellent phone cameras, the instant camera market continues to be popular. Since the line was launched in 1998, Fujifilm has sold more than 40 million Instax models worldwide, according to the company.
