Facebook launches Avatars, its Bitmoji competitor, in India – ProWellTech
Facebook Avatars, which allow users to customize a virtual aspect of themselves to use as stickers in chat and comments, are now available in India, the largest social juggernaut market for user accounts.
The American company said Tuesday that it launched Avatar in India as multiple social interactions move online amid a nationwide blockade in the world’s second largest Internet market. The company said that the avatars support a variety of faces, hairstyles, custom clothes for users in India.
The launch of Avatar arrives in India at the height of a reaction against Chinese apps in the country, some of which have placed serious competition to Facebook’s increasingly numerous tentacles in Asia’s third largest economy. On Monday evening, New Delhi ordered to ban TikTok and almost 60 other apps developed by Chinese companies.
The avatar of the social giant, a clone of the popular Snapchat Bitmoji, was first presented last year. The function, which Facebook considers an expression tool, aims to transform commitments in social service in a fun, young, visually communicative and “lighter” way.
Users can create their own avatar from the sticker tray in the comments section of a news feed post or in Messenger. Facebook has expanded the Avatars, initially available to users in Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the United States in recent weeks.
Dozens of companies including the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi have attempted to replicate Bitmoji in recent years, although nobody has expanded it as Snapchat.
Earlier this year, Snapchat introduced Bitmoji TV, a 4-minute comic cartoon series featuring user avatars. At the time, Snapchat said that about 70% of its daily active users, or 147 million of its 210 million users, had created their own Bitmojis.
Snapchat is preparing to launch its glasses, its AR glasses, in India. The California-based company has so far struggled to gain ground in India, where it had around 30 million monthly active users last month, according to mobile analytics firm App Annie, data that an industry executive shared with ProWellTech. Facebook has accumulated over 350 million users in India and its WhatsApp instant messaging service has over 400 million users in the country.
