Epson EF21 Projector Review: Brave Little Toster

No zoom or lens shift, but there is automatic focus. Geoffrey Morrison/CNET

EPSON EPIQVIcon is mini EF21, and its near-twin EF22, small, highly portable projector with Google TV produced for streaming. Both of them are quite flexible that you can throw on a film or TV show you have a wall and an outlet anywhere.

The size of a toster broadly, they are larger than most portable projector, but smaller than the traditional home projector designed for more permanent placements. The main difference between the two is that EF22 adds a gimbled baseA feature that I am unclear, so I focused on EF21.

While the size and design are great, the performance is less than the impressive, especially if you consider the price. With a retail price of $ 899 (broadly converts to £ 715 or AU $ 1,420), it is more expensive than the more portable model, and significantly underperform vs. “full size” prosector is priced at the price. However, as this writing, it is available for much lower than normal, currently $ 650, making it a more interesting offer.

  • Resolution: 1,920×1,080 pixels
  • HDR-computation: Yes
  • 3D-Sangat: No
  • Lumens Spec: 1,000
  • Zoom: No
  • Lens shift: No
  • Laser Life (General Mode): 20,000 hours

It was a few years ago that the projector 720p of this size and price was the best. It is very good to look at 1080p, or more accurately, it's great No See 720p's big, chunky pixel. Due to a remarkable loss, either size or price deficiency, it is that it has much simple lens compared to most projector in this price range. There is no lens shift – which, in fairness, is not particularly common anyway – but there is no zoom. This is a bit of a boomer, as it means that you have to transfer the projector physically to create a large or small image. Given its size and desired use, this is not a big deal. More a mini deal, if you will.

The Epson claims 1,000 lumen. I measured 502 with all the settings that we usually use to measure and review the projector. Dynamic mode was very bright at 1,044. It is worth noting that all projector measures less than their claimed glasses when they are set to show their best image quality. The Epson is usually closest to. The company has also sued manufacturers like JMGO, which is more than the brightness space, as it is something that FTC usually does not join. Regardless, 502 lumens are bright compared to most portable projector, while not much as a large projector of a similar price. We will get down in it. It is worth noting that dynamic mode did not look as bad as these modes often do. Therefore, if you want to place it on a random wall, it is fine and more than very bright.

The opposite ratio of the appson is around 348: 1. It is below average, but in some high-end projector's ballpark. Appson's lower-end projector usually contains quite poor opposite ratio. EF21 is definitely in that ballpark, but better than some.

As all modern laser (and LEDs) occur with projector, the light source should look at the life of the projector.

Update on April 2025: Due to an error at my end, the opposite ratio I have been originally measured. It is still quite low, it's not as low as I originally said. I have measured it again, and the number here represents those new measurements. This does not change our rating or overall opinion of EF21, as the side-by-side test plays a large share in our final tech of a product.

Connection

  • Hdmi input: 1
  • USB port: 1x USB-A (Additional Mini-USB for service only)
  • audio output: Headphone output
  • Internet: 2.4GHz/5GHz
  • away: No backlit

The single HDMI input of EF21 should be quite high as it is designed as a self-contained streaming machine, so you all want to plug into a game console. The said streaming is through Google TV, so all the common suspects are here: Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu and so on.

There are two 5-watt drivers tuned by Dolby, and they look alright. These are small drivers in a small box, so do not expect a carnegie hall. They are not super louds, nor is it very bass, but the dialogue is clear. There is a headphone output, so you can easily connect external speakers if you want.

Remote has dedicated Netflix and YouTube button with input, settings, brightness and volume.

Comparison of picture quality

I compared EF21 Anchor Mangal 3 Air And this Benq ht2060I believe, they can look like strange options.

3 The wind is small, and more portable, but it is interested in search of such projector for anyone. The Benq EF21 is more than doubled than the size, but is only slightly more expensive. It is less portable, but still small and lightly enough to stay on a shelf and the movie is brought out to the nights just like EF21. Which is to say, it is difficult to compare EF21 because it is in an asymmetrical mid-maidan of size and price. I compared all three on the 1.0-genn screen.

I was found to be close to Mars 3 air in the performance of EF21, so it made a large part of my comparison. The first noticeable thing was the difference. I measured 348: 1 with 3 air with 348 and 405: 1. It is quite close, but the side-by-side black bar was grayer on the appson, and the image was slightly flatter. So the side-by-side anchor finds more depth and punch, although it is not a standout in its area. The average contrast ratio measured in the projector for the last few years is 471: 1.

Appson engineers have done a good job with other aspects of the image, however, so the EF21 fare is better than your expectation. Its colors are more accurate and natural, so when it does not populate enough as an anchor, it is more pleasant to see otherwise. The tones of the grass, sky and skin look a little more realistic on all appsons.

A small leg (top of the image) on the front can angle the projector upwards.

With bright scenes, then, they match overall well. The excess brightness of EPSON also helps here. This also means that you can have a large image, which is still wravel, with EF21 compared to anchor. With dark scenes, however, the blacks are grayer on the appson and the anchor looks much better.

What about Benq? Well, the only way is that even here is a reasonable comparison because the price is due to the price. The additional $ 100 is ht2060 bright, even in the most bright mode of EF21, much better contrast ratio (better than 8.5x), better color, and so on. There is really no competition here, it looks much better. Yes, it is very large, with a 14.4 -inch 9.6 -inch footprint, but it shows that the $ 899 of the Epson has a lot to consider the performance you get.

Port

The case is available in diamond white (our samples), as well as quartz rose (a light pink), and opal green (a light green).

Jeffrey Morrison/Senate

With all the progress to light sources and other electronics, I can definitely understand projector companies that they are designing new models that are fit in the lower -lower service. A model that is more lifestyle-oriented, with a variety of colors such as attractive design and EF21, is definitely understandable. This is an easy sales for parents. Which sometimes appreciates something like this on the hand for the film Raat or a distraction before bedtime.

Appson, however, is in a difficult place. Its lower-end LCD chips have never seen my eyes as the same price or less as DLP. The opposite ratio is not simply, so the image is washed in comparison. While the designers of EF21 have done a great job to make other aspects of the image good, at least without high brightness with their other projector, EF21 decreases. This is especially true at $ 899, which is only $ 100 shy, which is a very large Benq HT2060, which makes it better in every way. Is it at least double that something big is really a burden of a shelf-space when it looks bright and better? This is a calculation that you have to consider because I can't see in your house (as far as you know).

EF21 provoked his gimbled EF22 brothers.

Epson

At its $ 650 selling price, EF21 is far more interesting. This Mars 3 is more attractive than the air, it is brighter and its image is otherwise slightly more pleasing. It is still slightly more expensive, but close. Of course, 3 air has a battery, so it is even more portable, but if you are seeing, I suspect that you were considering to start the appson.

so. Nothing is particularly wrong with EF21, but it is expensive for its performance.
