Samsung is slowly but surely moving into the global TWS headphone market, with each generation of Galaxy Buds posing a greater threat to Apple’s industry-leading AirPods. We’ve seen three versions of the Galaxy Buds so far, and the upcoming fourth iteration is already making headlines thanks to some early leaks and rumors. Here’s everything we know so far about Samsung’s upcoming earbuds.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro name and release date

Samsung switched from Galaxy Buds to Galaxy Buds Plus and then to Galaxy Buds Live. As you can see, the Galaxy Buds moniker has remained constant throughout and will most likely last for all future generations of Samsung’s premium earbuds.

It was previously believed that the new Galaxy Buds would be called Galaxy Buds Beyond. The rumor started when a trademark application with the name was discovered in the United States. However, a number of new certifications point to the name Galaxy Buds Pro.

Documents released by the FCC and Indonesia’s Telecommunications Authority SDPPI reflect the Galaxy Buds Pro branding with the model number SM-R190. The same model number was previously discovered in a Korean certification. All of this evidence makes it more than likely that the new Samsung Buds will be called the Galaxy Buds Pro.

As for the release date, Samsung usually launches a new pair of earbuds alongside its flagship smartphones. The Galaxy Buds Plus, introduced with the Galaxy S20, and the Buds Live were released with the Note 20. Following this tradition, we expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy Buds Pro on the same day as the Galaxy S21 series in January.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro Design

Unlike the reigning Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, the Galaxy Buds Pro is expected to continue the in-ear design of the original Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Buds Plus. So if you were looking forward to new bean-shaped earbuds from Samsung, you’d probably have to wait for a successor to Buds Live.

It is widely believed that the Galaxy Buds Pro will replace the Galaxy Buds Plus and that Samsung will keep the Live series separate. However, it’s also more than possible that the concha-fitting earbuds were a one-off experiment.

Even so, the Galaxy Buds Pro could offer a better fit by keeping the more conventional in-ear design. We didn’t see any renders of the earbuds ourselves, but it appears Samsung is modifying the charging case to resemble that of the Galaxy Buds Live.

The FCC listing shows the bottom of the charging case and confirms a square design compared to the pill-shaped box we saw on previous Samsung in-ears.

Technical data and functions

According to SamMobileThe Galaxy Buds Pro comes with Active Noise Cancellation, a feature that was overlooked on the Galaxy Buds Plus but added on the Galaxy Buds Live. With its in-ear design and ANC, the Galaxy Buds Pro should ideally isolate outside noise better than its predecessor.

The new earbuds are also expected to have an improved Ambient Mode so you can hear key sounds and be aware of your surroundings.

According to a 3C certification, the Galaxy Buds Pro charging case could come with a 472 mAh battery. In this case, Samsung has not changed the battery capacity as the Galaxy Buds Live case has exactly the same specs.
