All-virtual Google I/O 2021 happening in May

  • Google found out through a series of puzzles that Google I / O will take place in 2021.
  • The fully virtual event is free and will take place from May 18-20, 2021.
  • We expect a lot of new details about Android 12. It is also likely that we will see new Pixel A hardware.

Today Google released a new teaser page with puzzles. Once decrypted (thanks to Android police) the page has some preliminary details for the next iteration of Google’s developer event known as I / O.

Google canceled the I / O event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were rumors that it could be a scaled-down online affair instead, but in the end, Google simply canceled the whole thing. However, Google I / O 2021 is active in the all-online format that we expected for 2020.

Since the event is only online, it is free for everyone. This is a big change from previous years when in-person events could only be attended by paid ticket holders. To get one of these tickets, you must win a lottery-style competition. If you have “won” your ticket would cost you four figures.

We expect Google I / O to have tons of new information about Android 12 in 2021. It is also reasonable to expect new hardware restarts. Google introduced the Pixel 3a in iteration of I / O in 2019. Had the event happened in 2020, we would almost certainly have seen the Pixel 4a doing I / O. We wouldn’t be surprised to see the expected Google Pixel 5a at this year’s I / O, possibly alongside the Pixel Buds A (which Google has already accidentally leaked).

We’ll cover the entire event, so stay tuned for all the information!
