Easy Fixes for Mac Audio Problems: Being plagued by sound problems can heavily interfere with your day-to-day usage of a Mac. Audio glitches can occur for a variety of reasons. Assuming you have checked your actual sound isn’t on zero, and there is a Mac Internet connection, we will explore some common faults and misconceptions.
Choosing Audio Device
A really common bug with Mac’s is when we are plugging in our headphones, the Mac doesn’t properly change the output settings for us. An incorrect configuration or old drivers can lead the Mac to choose the wrong output device, so the sound doesn’t come through the headphones.
So, head to the Apple menu, where you can click on System Preferences and then Sound. Click on Output and select the correct device. It’s highly likely you have a Bluetooth device that is interfering, perhaps unknowingly, which is causing the Mac to play audio out of the wrong place. So, make sure to check the Input tab as well. You could turn off Bluetooth altogether and try the sound, too.
It’s possible that you haven’t performed your recent MacOS update. Running an outdated MacOS, which can then make certain drivers old too, can cause all sorts of problems. We cannot be sure if it is this, really, until you perform the MacOS and see the results. So, head to the Apple menu once more, click on System Preferences, then press Software Update.
Sound Cutting In and Out
If your Mac is outputting some audio, but it’s just cutting in and out, then it could be a few things. Firstly, try and see if it’s a single app – if it is, then updates this app or find an alternative. If all programs have the same problem, though, then you may want to try resetting your PRAM, which is where your Mac retrieves its basic settings for connected devices So, when the Mac is on the black loading screen after being reset, hold the Option + Command + P + R keys.
Quite the handful, but after a while of simultaneously being held down, you will be presented to a startup sound being played, or the Apple logo appearing then disappearing. This means the PRAM has been reset, and the sound may now work.
Disconnecting External Speakers
A common cause may be that the external speakers being used with the Mac are not being properly disconnected. For example, if the Mac is plugged into the TV or a second monitor, then it’s possible the Mac is trying to play sound out of there. So, fully ensure all external potential speakers are fully disconnected.
Core Audio Reset
Finally, if you’re still getting audio issues, then the Core Audio may need to be reset. So, launch the Activity Monitor and press All Processes. Search for ‘coreaudiod’ and then Force Quit the process when it appears. An alternative method is to head to the Terminal and type the command:
Sudo killall coreaudiod
After pressing return and typing in the admin password, you should check the sound again. Reset your Mac if the audio still isn’t working.
